Position SummaryThe University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, School of Medicine, Department of Pharmacology seeks to fill a full-time fixed term faculty open rank position. This position will be affiliated with UNC School of Medicine’s Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center ( LCCC ) and UNC Nutrition Obesity Research Center ( NORC ) within Gillings School of Global Public Health. This position will establish the metabolomics laboratory set to open in Spring 2024 that will operate within the UNC Proteomics and Metabolomics Core Facility ( PMCF ).

Primary responsibilities include broad collaborative involvement with the faculty members of the Departments to provide basic and applied research, education, and training. The successful candidate will also build an innovative and competitive research program supported by extramural funding, to support teaching, and training. They will provide relevant training to graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, and faculty, present seminars in areas of expertise, and teach as requested.

They will establish a metabolomics lab, including equipment acquisition, establishment of standard operating procedures, mass spectrometry methods for targeted and untargeted metabolomics and more. They will also contribute to data analysis and interpretation, grant writing, co-author manuscripts, and they will present at meetings and conferences.

They will help establish collaborations with researchers in LCCC and NORC , and across campus. Contribute to project management, experimental design, and all stages of a project (sample preparation, mass spectrometry analysis and data analysis). The successful candidate will lead method development efforts to apply new approaches for metabolomics sample preparation, data acquisition and analysis. They will work on a team to maintain, operate, and troubleshoot LC-MS systems and will be responsible for analyzing metabolomics datasets, including statistical and multivariate analysis, pathway analysis and data interpretation.

Minimum Education And Experience RequirementsPhD in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Nutrition, or a related discipline, with two or more years of hands-on experience in metabolomics and mass spectrometry.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And ExperienceThe successful candidate will have a working knowledge of cell biology, metabolism and/or proteomics. Experience in preparing different sample types (tissues, cells, biofluids) for metabolomics as well as experience with both targeted and untargeted metabolomics data analysis using a variety of software platforms such as Thermo Compound Discoverer, MetaboAnalyst.

The successful candidate will work on multiple projects at the same time; strong multitasking and time management skills, as well as the ability to work independently and efficiently is required.

The ability to collaborate effectively with the other Core team members, as well as individuals from multiple labs; therefore, strong communication and interpersonal skills are required.

Preferred candidates will have hands-on experience with instruments such as high-resolution mass spectrometers (Thermo Orbitrap systems, Agilent Q- TOF systems), triple quadrupoles, UHPLC /GC systems, and other similar instruments. This includes operation, troubleshooting and maintenance, as well as MS method development for targeted and untargeted metabolomics workflows.

Preference will be given to candidates with statistical and bioinformatics expertise.
